The year's first known spring chinook salmon was caught Thursday afternoon by Mark MacMillan of Portland as he was taking his boat to a moorage at Waverly Marina in Sellwood.

MacMillan launched at noon and decided to make a couple of trolling passes before mooring his sled.

He quickly got a bite and lost a fish, so tried a couple more passes and landed a 12-14 pound hatchery salmon.

MacMillan caught the fish on a green-label sized herring.
