Fishing Report: Time for a tuna trip! Aug 11th
It had been several years since I made it out for tuna. On Sunday, August 11, 2019 I finally got a chance to go. My friend Jim has his boat, a 19’ Arima, in a slip in Garibaldi. We were met early in the morning by another friend, John, and headed west.
The ocean was not as calm as predicted, but not terrible. The action was sporadic, but when we got fish on, it was amazing how many times it would be doubles. The power of these fish is amazing, I can easily see how people get hooked on it, pun intended! The take downs are incredible, with line screaming off the reel at a very fast pace. Seems like when you get one close to the boat, they decide to see how good your tackle is by stripping line of the reel, over and over, until finally wearing out .Got to use a hand line for the first time, these are effective, two of the tuna were caught on them, and a small one lost.
After going 9 for 11, with 36 miles to go east, to get back, we called it a day about 1:30. Two hours later we were back at the dock. Jim was kind enough, along with his wife Cheryl, to help, a lot, in processing the five tuna I kept on Sunday, thanks to both.
