Fishing Report: Three Arches bottom fishing and crabbing Oct 12th
Took a vacation day Friday and headed to Garibaldi Marina from Portland at 5:30 a.m. Took two anglers with me, Chad and Tim. I was surprised by the amount of people at the marina. It was not packed, but more activity than I expected given the very poor salmon fishing reports.
We dropped three crab pots baited with salmon carcasses south of the South Jetty and motored to Three Arches. The wind was problematic, I had the kicker running all day attempting to keep us straight up and down. Chad caught a nice ling cod, about 26 inches, we also caught 9 assorted bottom fish, canary, black sea bass, green ling, etc. Released several cabezon, one was the biggest I have every seen, retention not allowed for cabezon at this time. Looks like the population is doing very well. Headed back to the pots against a very strong wind, ended up with 24 nice keeper crab, full of meat, for the three pots. Crabbing is closing in the ocean from October 16 to November 30, 2018, but will remain open in the estuaries during this time.
Back to Portland watching for the next weather window, to plan the next trip.
