Fishing Report: Depoe Bay Thursday, Jul 26th

Left Portland at 3:30 a.m with my friends Jeremy, Buzz, and Matthew.  Crossed the bar in foggy, somewhat sloppy conditions, but definitely doable.  Started fishing about 6:00 a.m., in the first 30 minutes or so we lost 3 fish.  I thought we were in for a stellar day at this point.  The bite died quickly, and the fog was not going to give in to the sun.  We tried bottom fishing for a little while, and lost a lot of gear, at least we were near/on the bottom, lol.   Then we decided to salmon fish again.  Went two for three, one native coho released one in the box and one more long line release, called it about 12:30 p.m.

Even with the bypass, the difference in travel time/distance is enough for me to greatly prefer Garibaldi, which is only 1 hour 35 minutes or so from my house.  Jeremy was kind enough to share some of the coho with my wife and I, what an awesome eating fish!

Here is some valuable information and a link for more about Depoe Bay.  DEPOE BAY BAR HAZARDS EMERGENCIES …

The channel “dog leg” under the bridge obstructs your ability to view other vessels entering and departing the bay. Local practice requires vessels to make a broadcast on VHF channel 80 indicating their intention prior to leaving or entering the bay. The Coast Guard Station monitors VHF FM Channel 80.
