Garibaldi bottom fishing Sep 4th and 5th
Went down to Garibaldi Friday night, and started bottom fishing Saturday morning with Todd down at Three Arches in his 19’ Arima. The bite was not red hot, but I did catch a nice ling cod, and some bottom fish. Todd struggled here, and only caught one black sea bass, a nice one though! Then we went to fish the South Jetty area at the tide change, no action here, but alot of grass, and jellyfish, so we fished the Ghost Hole for an hour or so, no action, but plenty of seaweed to make things frusterating. Well that’s it I assumed when Todd said let’s go. He did not mean we were done fishing for the day, only that we were relocating, to some structure we found off of Manzanita! Todd rallied hard, and limited on lings and bottom fish. I had one ling and a limit of bottomfish. I have to give him serious credit for patience and perseverance. I would have called it earlier, after the Ghost Hole.
On Sunday, knowing the salmon bite was not really happening, we went back to Manzanita, and managed limits of bottom fish and one small ling I caught. We called it early, to clean things up and head back to Portland. Starting September 10, 2021, and continuing each Friday Saturday Sunday until the quota is met, is the non select coho fishery. This means any two salmon, as long as they meet the minimum length requirements. I am heading down Thursday night, and if the ocean conditions allow it, planning on fishing all three days. We plan to have green label herring and our 3.0 Spinfish ready to go. I am really hopeful the jellyfish will have moved out by the weekend. Areas we will focus on are probably from 90’ to about 150’ off Twin Rocks, right in front of Nehalem Bay entrance, and if these two do not produce, probably go deeper, looking for fish in water from 175’ or deeper.
I can now add the spotted ratfish to the list of fish I have caught. Foul hooked while bottom fishing off of Manzanita Sunday, quick photo, then released.
