Garibaldi Mar 11th
With good weather and ocean conditions, my friend Todd and I headed to Garibaldi Friday morning, leaving Portland at 5:00 a.m. We crossed a calm bar about 7:00 a.m. and headed South to Three Arches for bottom fishing. We fished in about 80’ to 160’ of water, there were a few other boats in the area, but not a lot. We used copper pipe jigs, baseball bat jigs, and bullet jigs with curly tails. All got bit, we ended the day with 10 rockfish, 2 limits, and 3 ling cod. We also released some very large cabezon. They are very exciting to catch, because you think you may have a big ling, until you see the fish, then a little disappointment sets in. They are still fun to catch and fight very hard.
We also ran into some schools of very big black sea bass, we both had doubles on at one point. I had kept a few canary rockfish earlier, certainly would not have done that had I known we were going to find big sea bass, oh well.
Tried for the fourth ling cod until about 2:00 p.m. and then called it a day. Smooth ride with a south wind back to the dock, then the commute back to Portland. The ocean looks rather rough for the foreseeable future, you have to watch for the weather windows this time of year.
