Salmon Garibaldi July 4th
We left the docks about 5:00 a.m. after adding 12.8 gallons of fuel to my boat, or $92.80. We then went north past Twin Rocks and fished in about 200’ to 240’ off of Nehalem. We were using 12 oz from 23’ to 35’ on the line counter. Had five coho and a chinook by 10:00 a.m., and returned a few native coho. It was a great day, but the fish were scattered, north in about 240’ appeared to offer the most action.
We were using Lemon Head Glo Spinfish, size 3.0. We also deployed one 360 flasher which was successful. Two interesting things happened on this trip. One of the hatchery coho had a whole herring in its mouth, with the tail sticking out, I would say a blue label size. We took this and fished it whole behind the 360, you could see a fish “chomping” on it, I thought it was a mackerel, then, the rod went all they way down, a nice hatchery coho. Other thing was while filleting found another coho that had a whole squid in its stomach, I guess when they are hungry one bite is all it takes. The coho are definitely putting on weight fast as the season progresses. We saw lots of baitfish and birds, good signs for the remainder of the season.
