Bottom Fishing June 6th
Target: Bottom fish
Catch: 4 ling cod, 4 sea bass
Two Fishermen on Lefty's Breeze with Captain Rob
Left dock at 9:30 a.m. , returned to dock about 1:45
Rigging: Shrimp Flies, Baseball Bat Jigs, Copper Pipe Jigs
Conditions: 11 foot tide swings required late start to fishing and early return due to strong winds.
Ocean conditions were forecast to be very nice, and they were. We did not leave the dock until 9:30 due to a huge tide swing. We went north off of Manzanita, and fished some reefs in about 120’ to 160’ of water. We fished with copper pipe jigs and baseball bat jigs. Got our fourth ling cod after losing two large ones right at the boat. The wind started up about 1:00 p.m. and we headed back to the docks. By the time we got in the wind was really blowing, Rob did an excellent job getting his boat into his slip without banging into anything. His slip is on the upwind side which can make docking difficult.
I have begun to tie my own shrimp flies, which is a really fun hobby, and I can control the colors, size, etc. I make sure and use plenty of “glue” to hold the shrimp flies in place, some of the commercially made ones seem to fall apart rather easy. Next Saturday, the 15th, select coho opens, I hope to target coho early then bottom fish in the afternoon.
