Astoria area - The Buoy 10 fishery is underway, but most anglers are underwhelmed with early season results. Chinook are being caught in the fishery daily, and the average size is fairly impressive for the few being caught.
What a difference a day or two can make! After the first trip on Friday the 3rd proved unproductive, Sunday was a whole different story.
First trip of 2018 to the CR Buoy this year. The ocean was rougher than forecast.
Beautiful ocean, and a smooth bar crossing on the incoming tide. Got four nice ling cod by around 10:00 a.m. and decided to troll for salmon.
Crossed the bar in foggy, somewhat sloppy conditions, but definitely doable.

Great weekend, good friends, the fishing was only fair, but the beauty of the coast never gets old. We also saw a whale right off the entrance to Garibaldi on the way in, that was really cool.
Wind chop and swells made for a long ride to Three Arches. We dropped three pots on the way. We managed four rockfish, and one ling cod, lost a few other fish, and 16 crab.
Went fishing with Chad and Michael, it was a nice day, but very slow fishing.
Awesome weekend of fishing. Caught ling cods on home made copper pipe jigs. One of the ling had about a 4’ piece octopus leg hanging out of its mouth….
